Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the size and shape of the breasts. In this plastic surgery, a silicone implant is placed to generate the changes desired by the patient. Depending on the patient’s characteristics, it can be placed behind the mammary gland or behind the pectoral muscle (the latter being more painful). The scar is usually located at the lower edge of the areola.
Anesthesia
The surgery is performed under general or regional anesthesia.
Duration
Outpatient procedure lasting 2 hours.
Recovery
Recovery time is 7 days.
Postoperative Care for Breast Augmentation
- Take the prescribed medications (antibiotic, pain reliever, and if necessary, muscle relaxants) for 10 days. Do not stop them without the doctor’s authorization.
- Use a postoperative bra for one month, day and night, to provide better breast shaping and limit pain while it heals internally. (Do not use an underwire bra during this month).
- Do not drive for 30 days or engage in activities or exertion with the arms.
- Massages will be recommended when the implants are placed in front of the muscle; otherwise, no postoperative therapy is necessary.
- Do not become pregnant until one year after the surgery.
- Do not perform activities such as aerobics, weight lifting, or high-impact exercises to avoid inflammation and tissue sagging for a month.
- Do not have sexual intercourse for three (3) weeks.
- During the first four weeks, avoid using pools to prevent infections.
